I want to share my experience as a 16 year old girl who was pregnant in order to help others who may need help going through a similar situation. I was dating a guy a year older than myself for about 7 months when I discovered I was pregnant. It was quite the shock. Being so young and hearing all the stories of young pregnant girls made me feel very scared at first. My boyfriend reassured me that everything would be OK and that he would stick around for the long run. He promised to be there through the think and thin no matter how hard it became. Well, it wasn’t long until we broke up and he quickly disappearance from my life. I was starting to see that this would be the roughest nine months a girl could go through. Being sixteen and pregnant was not going to be easy.
My daughter, Michelle, was born just before Christmas. For me, that was the best gift of the holidays. Of course, it was sad to not have the babies father around but in the end it was for the better. I was able to get me GED and also enroll in college. I figured even though it was tough having a child so young, I still needed to make something of myself.. especially for my daughter. It was quite the task trying balance being a mother and also going to college. In the end it was always my daughter motivating me and helping me get through everything. Just the look and joy she brought to me everyday made it all possible. You have to remember that once you have a baby, your life isn’t just about you anymore. Its about you and your family.
The best advice I can give anyone is to think hard and deep about what your doing sexually and make sure you do the right thing. Having a child this young changes your life very quickly. There is no time to go out, hang with friends, and go do the normal activities that a teenager would do. I only caved into it because my boyfriend encouraged it so much and I wanted to feel loved. I never thought for a second that I would be one of those teenagers who go pregnant. Take my advice and stay away from it and wait till you can handle the responsibility. Going through with it can leave you as the next 16 and pregnant teenager. Just remember that!
